Hi Parents,

Every young player grows in height, strength, and skill.

Just like shoes, their tennis equipment needs to grow with them.

Choosing the right racquet is one of the simplest ways to support your child’s confidence, comfort, and long-term development on the court.

Why the Right Size Matters

A racquet that is too heavy or too long can make it hard for a child to control their swing. It can also lead to frustration, poor technique, or even injury.

When the racquet matches a player’s size and stage, it allows them to build proper strokes, find rhythm, and develop a natural feel for the game.

Sizing Test

Quick Racquet Size Guide

Ages 4 to 6: 19 to 21 inch racquet • Red ball (foam or felt) • Mini court

Ages 7 to 8: 23 inch racquet • Orange ball • Three-quarter court

Ages 9 to 10: 25 inch racquet • Green dot ball • Full court (introduction)

Ages 11 and above: 26 to 27 inch racquet • Yellow ball • Full court

Coach’s Tip:

Have your child stand the racquet next to their leg. The racquet head should reach just above their ankle. If it is much shorter or taller, it is time to reassess.

When to Upgrade

Most children outgrow their racquets every one to two years.

It might be time to upgrade if you notice any of these signs:

  • The racquet looks small next to their body

  • They are using more wrist than body to swing

  • They are hitting late or missing the sweet spot

  • They have recently grown taller or stronger

Upgrading gradually from red to orange to green to yellow helps their skills evolve naturally with their tools.

Beyond the Racquet

It is not just about the frame.

  • Grip size: Smaller hands need smaller grips for control and comfort

  • Shoes: Lightweight, flexible shoes help players move easily

  • Strings: Softer strings improve touch and feel for beginners

  • Confidence: The most important piece of equipment they can bring

The right racquet helps a young athlete enjoy the game instead of struggling with it.

It supports healthy growth, good habits, and a lifelong love for tennis.

🎾 Coach’s Corner

“Parents often ask when to move up in racquet size. My rule of thumb is simple: if your player looks like they are working harder to lift the racquet than to hit the ball, it is time to upgrade.

A properly sized racquet does not just make tennis easier; it makes it fun. And fun is what keeps children coming back to the court.”
